Microgynon 30 contains synthetic oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) and progesterone (levonorgestrel). These hormones prevent the monthly release of an egg, make it harder for sperm to travel through the cervix, and change the womb lining to stop a fertilised egg from implanting.

Active ingredients: Ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms, Levonorgestrel 150 micrograms. Inactive ingredients: lactose monohydrate, maize starch, povidone K-25, magnesium stearate, macrogol 6000, talc, hypromellose, titanium dioxide (E171).

Common side effects include nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, and mood changes. Irregular bleeding may occur initially. Rare but serious risks include blood clots, heart attack, and stroke. Not suitable for smokers over 35, those with clotting disorders, certain cancers, or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Always read the patient information leaflet before use.
