Desogestrel works mainly by stopping ovulation. It also thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg, and thins the lining of the womb to prevent implantation. Unlike traditional POPs, desogestrel blocks ovulation in most cycles, making it as effective as combined pills when taken correctly.

Active ingredient: Desogestrel 75 micrograms. Inactive ingredients: lactose monohydrate, maize starch, povidone K30, all-rac-alpha-tocopherol, silica colloidal anhydrous, stearic acid. Film coat: hypromellose, macrogol 400, titanium dioxide (E171).

Common side effects include irregular bleeding, headaches, nausea, acne, mood changes, and breast tenderness. Rare side effects may include ovarian cysts and allergic reactions. Not suitable if you have a history of thrombosis, severe liver disease, or hormone-sensitive cancers.
